“Milan is marvellous, picturesque, and full of elegance” – Wesley Sneijder
Milan is, without doubt, one of the smartest cities in Italy. It helps that it is home to the impressive Duomo, the stunning Galleria Vittorio, Santa Maria delle Grazie, La Scala and a plethora of ornate monuments and statues honouring heroes and artists. You won’t find many fountains or water features here because of severe drought warnings over the past few years but aside from that, it is a very charming city aesthetically. It is also a very pedestrian-friendly city, but be careful: many pavements are uneven. There are plenty of pedestrian-only zones and it is a great city to explore on foot.

Mandarin Oriental Milan, Via Andegari 9, Milan 20121
For a romantic, indulgent and glamorous break in Milan, there really is no better dwelling than the magnificent Mandarin Oriental. Right by La Scala, the world-famous opera house, it is one of the most luxurious city hotels you will find. Fusing eastern opulence with western style, you and a beautiful date will be residing in the lap of luxury. The rooms and suites are not just beautiful but incredibly comfortable. Parquet flooring and muted tones provide a relaxing setting. The bathrooms are, of course, in black-and-white Italian marble.
Seta is the hotel’s two-Michelin-starred restaurant. If you and your gorgeous companion fancy something a little more low-key for dinner, then the leafy courtyard is the perfect spot for your morning coffee or an afternoon aperitif.
The spa is a welcome paradise from the hustle and bustle of Milan’s chaotic streets. A huge water feature greets you as you enter, instantly ensuring a calming atmosphere. Calmness continues throughout the spa, which is heavily influenced by the five elements of Feng Shui. If you and your companion enjoy a spa break, you must slip into your fluffy white robes and book your own private spa suite. An elevated spa experience for couples.
Service-oriented, guests are even provided with a WhatsApp number for the hotel’s concierge. If you have ever stayed at the Mandarin Oriental, Hyde Park, or Mayfair here in London, then you will know that staff will attend to your every desire. Currently, Italy has two locations in Italy: Milan and Lake Como. However, next year sees their third property open its doors in Rome.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, 20123 Milan
You cannot visit Milan without indulging in a little retail therapy. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is Italy’s oldest shopping precinct. Named after the first King of the Kingdom of Italy, the Galleria opened in 1877. Today, you will find the most prestigious designer shops from Gucci, Moschino, Bvlgari, to Prada and beyond.
Not joy a shopping mall; the glass ceiling, ornate painting and tiled floors are simply spectacular. Below your feet, you may notice four crests with the coat of arms for Milan, Rome, Florence and Turin. Notice that the Turin tiles are damaged in this otherwise pristine and well-maintained building. The bull, which represents Turin, is said to bring luck or fertility to those who spin around on its reproductive area three times.
Galleria also houses several bars and restaurants. One of which has a feature on the World’s Best Bars list: Camparino. Enjoy a Negroni and take the weight off whilst you plan your next purchase. The quadrilatero della moda, which translates to the fashion quadrilateral, is right beside the Galleria and has every store you could ever dream of.
If you are not a fan of shopping, it is still worth walking around this stunning part of the city. At each and every turn are mesmerising landmarks. La Scala, the opera house, is mind-blowingly beautiful. You may also come across a familiar artist: Leonardo da Vinci. You cannot miss the gigantic Duomo, Milan’s Cathedral. Not only does it house spectacular and historical treasures, but the rooftop is incredible as well. A must-do in Milan.

Party like it’s 1999
Combine couture with cocktails and visit some of Milan’s nighttime hotspots. Dolce & Gabbana have their very own DG Martini bar. Armani has a glowing Bamboo bar and rooftop inside the slick Armani hotel. Bvlgari, of course, has its sumptuous flagship hotel here with a stunning black oval bar and floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking a lush green terrace. Philipp Plein has opened the doors to its glitzy hotel, which defies imagination, complete with a lively restaurant and bar that stays open until the small hours. Every designer is thrust in your face here, and Milan is very proud of its fashionable credentials.
When in Milan, you cannot escape luxury fashion houses at every turn. Immerse yourself and your gorgeous date in fashion and fun for a night of decadence. In Milan, designer labels are for all. Fashion here is less conceited and much more flamboyant and entertaining. A great opportunity to dress up and paint the town red or whatever the colour of the season may be.
