Dinner by Heston at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel is a great place to take one of our beautiful girls
Dinner by Heston is the two Michelin starred restaurant of eccentric chef Heston Blumenthal. As well as the main restaurant, there is also a private dining room for 12 people and a chef’s table. This isn’t to say that the “main” restaurant” is just for the ducks and geese, because it’s truly spectacular. Sumptuous leather, dark wood, huge mirrors and gleaming glass characterise this luxurious restaurant with stunning views of Hyde Park.
At Dinner by Heston, the cuisine is British, but with a crazy Heston twist. The orange you see in front of your eyes plays a trick on you; the “meat fruit” is actually a chicken liver parfait with citrus. When you take out your napkin, you find a little note with information about the food. It’s these little touches that make this restaurant a great place to eat, because there’s so much to discover and talk about. In keeping with the 13th century, all the dishes on the menu are marked with a date. The truffle, for example, is dated 1500 and consists of: Truffle, Mushroom Parfait and Grilled Bread. The dish costs £30 and I wonder how much it would have cost 522 years ago. There is a wide range of fancy dishes on the menu, all fabulously prepared. The fillet of Hereford beef with mushrooms, ketchup and triple-cooked crisps at 1830 is a real treat. If you still have room for dessert, don’t miss the legendary Tipsy Cake (circa 1810).
From Monday to Thursday, a five-course tasting menu is also on offer for £135 per person, with the option of a wine accompaniment for a further £105 per person. It’s a great menu with two of the classics already mentioned. So if you want the full crazy Heston experience, I recommend you try it. For a truly eccentric British restaurant experience, book a table at Dinner by Heston at the Mandarin Oriental and bring a pretty girl for a memorable dinner date.
